Foster and Adjaye unveil Smithsonian designs
Foster + Partners and a joint venture featuring Adjaye Associates are among
six firms to have unveiled designs for the new $500 million (£350
million) Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. USA
Adjaye Associates, which formed a joint venture with The
Freelon Group and Davis Brody Bond, and Foster + Partners are taking
part in the competition for the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of
African American History and Culture, which will be located on a 2ha
plot adjacent to the Washington Monument on Constitution Avenue.Following
the current exhibition of designs, a competition board or jury will
select a firm to present a formal proposal for the design of the
museum. The name of the team is to be announced in mid-April.Construction is expected to begin in 2012, and the museum will open to the public in 2015.Other
firms that submitted designs were: Devrouax + Purnell, Diller Scofidio
+ Renfro, Moody Nolan and Moshe Safdie and Associates.
